Special Features
- Actors' Commentary: First up, actors Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette deliver an unexpectedly boring discussion that suffers from long stretches of silence and inane tangents. Arquette has a few decent anecdotes to share, but I really thought the two would bring far more of their on-screen chemistry to the recording booth. I suppose it wasn't meant to be.
- Director's Commentary: Tony Scott redeems things with an informative solo track that finds the director delving into the production, Tarantino's script, his casting sessions, the actors' performances, and the challenges of wrangling such a large and sprawling ensemble piece. Moreover, Scott is incredibly candid (to the point of being blunt) and describes a variety of problems and attitudes he encountered on set.
- Writer's Commentary: Last but certainly not least, fidgety writer Quentin Tarantino provides a rat-a-tat-chat that covers his career, his introduction to and immediate love of film, his born-from-turmoil career, his screenwriting work, and his eventual emergence as a director. Even though he barely focuses on the production at hand, his commentary is nevertheless worth the time it takes to sit through the entire film again.
- Selective Commentaries (56 minutes): Several notable supporting actors have also recorded scene-specific commentaries. Dennis Hopper gives a dry and rambling eleven-minute account of his work, Val Kilmer offers an unfocused but relatively interesting four-minute spiel, Michael Rapaport delivers an amusing thirty-five minute chat about his experience, and Brad Pitt drops the best commentary of the bunch with a six-minute reflection on his time on set.
- Deletions, Extended Scenes, and Alternate Ending (SD, 36 minutes): More than a half-hour of cuts, trims, and alterations fill out this uneven but ultimately enjoyable collection. Scott provides optional commentary for each scene, while Tarantino pops in to discuss the alternate ending.
- Branching Featurette (SD, 21 minutes): An interactive, expandable five-minute featurette that includes a variety of additional content. Simply click on the icon that appears from time to time to gain access to behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, and more.
- Original 1993 Featurette (SD, 6 minutes): A brief EPK that will only appeal to completists.
- Theatrical Trailer (SD, 3 minutes)
