Special Features
As has been the case lately with WellGo Collector's Edition Blu-rays, some of the supplements are on the Blu-ray with the main feature, while others are included on a supplementary DVD. The Blu-ray extras are:- Behind the Scenes War Zone (SD; 7:57) includes some neat time lapse photography of the huge World War I battle set being built, and then moves on to show that sequence being filmed.
- Behind the Scenes Casablanca (SD; 9:34) shows several sequences being filmed that take place in and around the big nightclub where Chen Zhen becomes a partner.
- Theatrical Trailer (HD; 2:18)
- International Trailer (HD; 1:11)
- Behind the Scenes. A nice selection of segments is included which offers lots of shots of the film being made in almost all of the major sets utilized in the film. There is copious rehearsal footage, especially in the Hongkou Dojo sequence, which shows how carefully Donnie Yen plots out the elaborate fight sequences, and how also some fortuitous things just happen on the fly and are kept in the final cut of the film. The individual segments are:
Tianjin Street (3:33)
Market Place (5:30)
Newspaper Office (3:19)
Japanese Headquarters (3:04)
Student Movement (3:48)
Hongkou Dojo (11:03) - Interviews. All of the major actors as well as director Andrew Lau are interviewed, some fairly briefly, other for quite some time. All of them speak about their characters and different aspects of the filming. Lau goes into some detail on the history of the character Chen Zhen which may help to fill in some gaps for those not that well acquainted with Zhen's (fictional) history. Shu Qi also gives us some backstory about her character which must have been planned at some point, but which is certainly not in the final cut in any definitive way. The interview segments are:
Andrew Lau (16:27)
Gordon Chan (1:43)
Donnie Yen (9:23)
Shu Qi (9:44)
Anthony Wong (2:58)
Huang Bo (5:16)
Kohata Ryuichi (3:58)
